SSC Technical: Promotion Criteria and Salary Structure

Before mentioning the promotion criteria, I will explain in brief about the commissioned officers, their ranks and how commissioned officers are classified in two categories:

1) Time Grade Ranks

Time Grade Ranks are those ranks that are attainable by a commissioned officer of Lieutenant Rank after spending a certain period of time in service. Ranks from Lieutenant to Lieutenant Colonel comes under this category.

2) Selection Grade Ranks

In Selection Grade Ranks commissioned officers of Colonel grade ranks and above are considered and they get promoted on the basis of grading in different courses, on merit in service, and on the basis of officer annual confidential report(ACR).

These Ranks are from Colonel and Above.

To know more about the Indian army ranks in detail then click here.

Now, let’s have a look at the promotion criteria and pay in the table below.

You may want to put the question that What is Colonel (TS)? In the army, a Lieutenant Colonel is promoted to Colonel when he satisfies 2 requirements:-

  • satisfies the service time in the Lieutenant rank.
  • Clears promotional board exams

So, those Lieutenant Colonels who are unable to clear promotional board exams, automatically become Time-Scale Colonels on completion of 26 years of commissioned service. That’s why, their rank is written as Colonel(TS).
