7 ways for girls to join the Indian Army in 2021-2022.

The Indian Army has trained thousands of women at the Officer’s Training Academy, Gaya since the women’s participation in the army came into existence. It was in the year 1992 when women/girls were officially legalized to join the Indian army. Just like men, women/girls can serve the nation in a variety of ways like as officers, nurses, soldiers, trainers, cooks, intelligence agents and much more in various arms and services of the Indian Army.

Types of Commissions

Before I explain, how to join the Indian army as a girl, first it is important to explain under which commissions officers are inducted in the Indian army. These are:-

1) Permanent Commission

A Permanent Commission allows you to have a career till you retire. It is granted for the candidates that join the army through the entries mentioned below:

  • NDA, Pune – 10+2 pass or 12th pass or its equivalent (Through UPSC)
  • IMA, Dehradun – After clearing either Central Defense Service Exam (UPSC),  or by joining through 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme(TES), Technical Graduate Course, AEC (Men) and by University Entry Scheme.

2) Short Service Commission

A Short Service Commission allows you to join the Indian army after the 12th or above as a commissioned officer for 10 or 14 years. After the period of 10 year ends, you have 3 options:

(I) Opt/elect for the Permanent Commission.

(II) Opt-out(Retirement) from the service.

(III) Opt for 4 years of extension. It is must be noted, you can resign anytime during the period of 4 years extension.

1) Soldier General Duty (Corps of Women Military Police)

2) Military Nursing Service

The Military Nursing Services is an integral part of the Armed Forces Medical Services(AFMS) which also includes the Army Medical Corps(AMC) and the Army Dental Corps(ADC). An officer is in the MNS is granted Permanent Commission or the Short Service Commission(SSC) by the Government guzet notification.

The officers of MNS have not only served in India but have also played a role in the United Nations peace missions abroad in countries like Cambodia, Somalia and other nations.

MNS in arms and services is a great opportunity for females and women candidates who want to join the Army as a Nursing Officer.

Educational QualificationsFor girls in 12th:
Candidates must have passed in the first attempt, Senior Secondary Examination (10+2) or equivalent (12 Years schooling) examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany & Zoology) and English with not less than 50% aggregate marks as a regular student from a Statutory/ Recognized Board/University/ Examination Body.

For girls in their Final Year:
Candidates who will be appearing for the final year of the qualifying examination during the current academic session may also apply provisionally.
Physical standards- Medical fitness will be determined as per standards applicable for commission in the Armed Forces.

Selection: The selected candidates will be called for an objective type Computer Based Examination (CBE) of 90 minutes duration likely to be held in April 2021.

On the basis of the CBE exam, candidates will be called for an SSB interview during June 2021. The final selection will be done on the basis of the combined merit of CBE & interview, subject to medical fitness.

Join the army through Military Nursing Service(MNS) in 2021.

Now, after the 10th and 12th standard, the girls can join the Indian army only after graduation through:-

  • Short Service Commission (SSC) Non- Technical Women
  • NCC (SPL) Entry Women

3) Short Service Commission Non-Technical Women

Girls can join the Indian Army under Short Service Commission by giving UPSC exam. This entry is for those girls who belong to Non- Technical Educational Background.

To apply for this, you have to undergo Central Defense Examination which is organized twice a year i.e July and November notified by the Union Public Service Commission.

The SSC Non-Tech women have 12 vacancies per course.

Selection and Training

After clearing your UPSC exam, you have to go through a 5-day period SSB interview, once SSB recommends you, then you will be medically examined according to the medical standards of the army and if you are “Medically Fit,” after this, you are fit to join OTA Chennai and undergo training for the period of 49 weeks.

Once your training is completed, you will be granted the rank of Lieutenant under the short service commission.

4) Short Service Commission (Technical) Women

You can join the Indian army as a girl through SSC Technical Women after graduation. To apply for this, you check for the notifications published in the newspaper or at the official website(joinindianarmy.nic.in) of the Indian army, in the months of June / July and December/January.

This entry scheme has 20 vacancies for Women which may increase or decrease according to circumstances.

5) NCC (SPL) Entry Women

Girls can join the Indian army through NCC(SPL) Entry for Women after graduation. To apply for this, you have to undergo an SSB interview directly.

The NCC (SPL) Entry Women have 4 vacancies per course.

6) Judge Advocate General Women

JAG is the legal branch of the Indian Army and looks into matters related to military law, military justice and military court-martials. This department consists of those army officers who are educated in military law and provide legal help to the army in humanitarian issues and other military aspects.

As a girl, you join this Indian army department by directly going through an SSB interview. You will be notified of this entry in notifications published in the newspaper or here, in the months of July/August and January/February.

7) Territorial Army

The Territorial Army is the second line of defense set up on Oct 9th, 1949, It is the part of the regular Indian army and ensures the security of the nation from internal threats and supporting the Indian army whenever it is needed.

It is meant for those people who weren’t able to join the army due to some unforeseen circumstances and have crossed the minimum age requirements to enter the Indian army.

It must be noted if you are studying in college or just completed your graduation, then you cannot join the Territorial Army. The TA releases notifications regarding joining it twice a year but the number of vacancies will only be specified in its notification.

  • There are currently 9118 women officers serving in the Indian Armed Forces.
  • In 2014-15, there were 3000 women officers serving in the Indian Armed Forces.
  • Women, now are allowed to fly fighter planes.
  • In 2016, Woman were inducted as pilots of maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
  • Excluding the medical wing, the Indian army has 6807 women officers, the Airforce has 1607 women officers and the Navy has 704 women officers.
  • In percentage terms, woman officers are – 0.56% of the army, 1.08% of the Airforce, and 6.5 % of the navy.
  • According to minister of state for defence Shripad Naik, 1700 posts for women in Corps of Military Police (CMP) in the non-officer cadre.

  • The government’s July 23, 2020 order specified grant of permanent commission to women officers in 10 streams—Army Air Defence (AAD), Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), and Intelligence Corps in addition to the existing streams of Judge and Advocate General (JAG) and Army Educational Corps (AEC).

Then, after 12th standard, Girls can enter the Indian Armed Forces which comprises of the Indian Army, the Indian navy, and the Indian Airforce through Military Nursing Service.

After graduation, girls can enter in the army in five ways:-

1)Short Service Commission Non- Technical Woman – This is basically for those girls who comes from Non-Technical Background.

2)Short Service Commission Technical Woman– As the name suggests, this entry is for those girls who have Technical Background i.e. those who are engineers.

3)Judge Advocate General Woman – You can join the army as an advocate after completing your LLB degree through this scheme.

4)NCC Special Entry Scheme – You just have to crack the SSB interview to enter the army through this scheme. It must be noted that Candidates must have ‘B’ grade in NCC ‘C’ Certificate.

5) Territorial Army– Those girls who weren’t able to enter the army through regular entries mentioned above can join the territorial army provided that they fulfill the necessary conditions mentioned above for the same.
